Active Home Week 2020 April 27th - May 1st

As we are not in school at the moment we won't be able to run our annual Active Schools Week this year. In it's place, we will be running our Active Home Week. Each day there will be challenges and initiatives for the children to take part in. Each day will be dedicated to a fundamental movement skill.
Keep track of your progress for the week on the Active Home challenge card and send it to your teacher at the end of the week

Day 1 - Monday 27th
Sock n basket championships
4 pairs of socks and washing basket needed
Focus on object control skills of throwing
4 levels
4 shots score 3 to move on to next level

- Level 1 6 big steps back. Underarm throw. Land socks in basket = 1 point. 3 points needed
- Level 2 10-12 big steps back. Overarm throw. Land in basket = 1 point. 3 points needed
- Level 3 8 big steps back. Basket against a wall. Socks must rebound off wall into basket =1 point. 3 points needed.
- Level 4. Create your own challenge with sock’n’basket. Invitation to record and send it to activeschool@naomheoin.ie and we will share some of the ideas.
Day 2 - Tuesday 28th
Ball skills challenges
Focus on object control skills bouncing/catching/ball handling
Basketball v Gaelic football
4 challenges to be uploaded for basketball and for Gaelic football. Challenges range in difficulty. Children pick sport and complete challenges in order 1-4. Can do both sports if they would like to.
Challenges scored most in 30 seconds. Keep scores as classes.

Day 3 - Wednesday 29th
New Skill Challenge
Today is about trying a new skill. Juggling is a good example which is also great for hand/eye co-ordination. Skipping, striking a tennis racket/hurl are also good examples if you have the space and equipment. Send in your new skill attempts to the active school email.
Run Around Ireland – We want to make a big effort to try an run some distance as well today. If we can’t track distance, we can run laps of garden or even room and send in how many to active schools page and we will calculate accordingly.

Focus on striking with an implement.
Brush Golf
You need a sweeping brush, a basket or target, pairs of socks and toilet roll.
Challenge 1
10 shots. 5 big steps back from basket. How many can you score into the basket. Basket on its side to allow socks to roll into it. Strike socks with brush like a golf club.
Challenge 2
Course must be between 2 rooms of house. Start at end of one room. Count how many shots it takes to get through the two rooms and into the basket on its side.
Challenge 3
Stack 6 rolls of toilet paper into a pyramid, 3 on bottom, 2 in middle and 1 on top. Line up sock 8 steps back. How many can you knock over with your shot. Take 5 shots

Need at least two players. If you have more you can play several games and make it a competition. 2 players facing each other. One player starts with small ball or pair of socks. Get into press up position/plank position and the aim is to score between opposition players arms. Play game up to 5.

- With a partner, or against the wall, how many times can you throw a small ball or pair of socks to each other.
- Squat jump land – in 30 seconds, how many times can you squat down, jump as high as you can, land with your knees bent and jump again straight away
